Oscar

My name is Oscar Mengovitz! I’m a good boy.

BIG
GREEN
EYES

That’s the first thing I noticed about Oscar. Photos don't do him justice.

Oscar has an interesting story: he was born on the streets of Israel and was adopted by his family there. When they moved to the United States they brought him along, and they all lived happily for several years. But when they started having kids, they found it hard to give Oscar the attention that he had enjoyed for so long. They were very sad to rehome him because he was part of the family, but they couldn’t look after him the way he deserved. A friend of mine told me Oscar was about to be surrendered to a city shelter, but luckily she helped me intercept him and now he’s hanging out here.

Because Oscar is Israeli, he’s a little prickly on the outside but has a big heart inside. At first I thought his name is Oscar like Oscar the grouch, then I remembered that I have this tendency to describe cats as Muppets.
How is he prickly? Well, the first couple of days I knew him he was annoyed with me because I was a total stranger and he didn’t know who I was. He might bop me with his paw, or scold me with a nibble (he doesn’t bite aggressively at all, just some nibbles to express himself.) I wasn’t sure how to break the ice with him.
Then when I started sitting on the floor and he had a warm lap to access, things started to change. He wanted to snuggle that whole time.
Oscar likes company and will let you know right away that he misses you. He will rub against your legs and you will feel it. He will start talking as soon as you show up as if to say, hey, old friend, how are you? He loves to chat and shoot the cat breeze.

He is a classic curious cat. He loves climbing into boxes, crawling under furniture, and peering through the window at cat television (ie birds). He also seems interested in rituals like brushing and flossing.

We've been training him to wear a harness.

HANDSOME
Picture
Oscar is a lithe orange tabby with handsome stripes and a slender tail. He's about ten years old and is in good health. He has had a couple teeth removed so he likes softer foods, but he does eat kibble several times a week. But he is especially fond of bread. And lettuce.
Picture
Oscar would do well as an indoor cat in an adult home. He might not be the right fit for a family with small children, because that's the environment that he left behind. But he has a good mixture of independence and affection-seeking, so he could fit in well with a single person or a couple looking for a cat companion who isn't overly demanding.
Come meet Oscar! Text Jason at 415-254-4890 or send email to mengovitz@gmail.com. Thank you for learning about this great little boy... he wants to meet you!
